Freja is having a bit of a moment in fashion right now.  And very much deserved I must say.  I love that she’s getting so much work lately.  She brings a unique look to this industry and always produces excellent work.  She even managed to win over the Kaiser himself (who famously dislikes tattoos) who has called her a muse of the present.  I think sometimes we forget just how pretty Freja is.  I am so used to her androgynous look and tom-boyish edge that I forget how very gorgeous she is.  The angles to her face are shown very nicely in this beauty shoot for Vogue Nippon.  And I love the use of shadow and light to enhance the hollows of her cheekbones.  Moreover, I love how she has shaped the industry’s view of tattoos.  She continually gets work for high profile campaigns and books numerous runways all while having very visible tattoos.  Her body is a canvas just as much as models are a canvas for designers.  I love that they have just embraced the ink right along with it.  She may not be doing much in this particular shoot, but Alasdair does a great job of showcasing her beauty.

First off, I love the high drama of this editorial.  Vogue Paris rarely (if ever) disappoints.  I don’t even mind the bowl-cut hair either.  I think it suits the stark lines throughout this editorial.  Freja languidly splays her limbs, yet she uses her arms as a way to frame the shot.  It’s lovely.   I like the softness she presents and how she does this without losing any of her edge.  She retains her androgyny appeal and distinct edginess.  That line is something Freja is quite good at and Carine clearly recognizes it.

Of course, j’adore Hedi Slimane.  He was the very first photographer whose work I admired and follow when I got interested in the fashion world.  He always produces these beautiful black and white photos.  Moreover, I am a big fan of time-focused concepts.  Carine keeps it interesting with dangling pocket watches and presents boldly-lined wrist watches.  The lines they give are simply fantastic.  The featured shot above is an excellent example of this.  Another is her shirtless in a white gauzy skirt with elbows bent and hands braced on her thighs.  But my favorite is the shot from collarbone to knee where her elbow is bent towards her body.  The black watch complements the inky darkness of her leather skirt, yet stands out just enough.  In fact, I’d be hardpressed to find shot I didn’t like.  This is another quality dramatic edgy piece from Carine and Vogue Paris.

Venus in Furs

There is something really eerie about Steven Meisel’s latest editorial for Vogue Italia.  One on hand, there’s a sense of vulnerability beyond mere nudity.  And as someone pointed out, there is something quite voyeuristic about this like “the subjects were just toys for a third party observer” (Quatre Tsien).  The positioning is not awkward, but there’s a disjointedness about it (very much like positioned dolls or toys controlled someone).  On the other, this is really ethereal.  [And for any who are immature about the nudity,] I detect no sexual attraction or tension amidst naked piling.  There’s a pure beauty about this which the lighting certainly enhances.  All the porcelain skin positively glows.   In any case, Meisel certainly knows how to get us all talking with this intriguing editorial.

God J’adore Carine Roitfeld.  She does such a wonderful job helming Vogue Paris. Her editorials are amazing with excellent cutting edge styling.  Masks are not original; they were an age-old form of art for the aristocratic elite throwing parties.  Moreover, fashion has taken a hold of them with creative license.  However, trust Carine to make beautiful masks hardcore.  The styling and beautiful is strong, slightly off-putting, and so very French.  An excellent editorial to include in Vogue Paris‘s 90th Anniversary Issue.  I love the avante-garde theatrics of this.  Mert & Marcus are the perfect choice to shoot this as well.  They have had a long standing relationship with Vogue Paris.  Brava Carine.

Ports 1961 Spring 2011

I thought that I would be more impressed by Ports 1961 but seeing as I never was before, I really should be surprised.  I did like a couple looks though.  The maxi dress that Tao is wearing is lovely.  Ports 1961 was a bit free-floating and little too unstructured for my liking.  I could care less for flowery spring offerings.   To be fair, they did open with structure.  I love the cape-like jacket that Freja is wearing.

Poetics of Body

Love the title: “Poetics of Body.”  Quite elegant.  I like the quirkiness of the shoot and playfulness of Freja.  I like the styling as well; there’s a good mix of tailored streamlined menswear and voluminous layers.  Freja’s an excellent model to use for this type of tone.

Oh so glamourous.  I love seeing the different sides to Freja.   She does a wonderful androgyny and a beautiful romantic.  And now I see her in high glamour.   The clothes are exquisite.  The lace and the material are beautiful.  I even really like the bowl cut with the clothes.  It makes a nice change from the long pulled back prom hair that’s typically done with glamorous styling.  Also, Freja just plays it up masterfully, knowing when to look at the camera and when to look away.  Just stunning.

Colour Shock

Something about this pulled me in.  Obviously, there’s Freja and she’s fantastic.  But there’s just…something.  Wonderfully languid with unusual poses.  I guess there’s just an innate coolness about it.  Freja’s most definitely got oodles of charisma.  She’s just pulling us all in and nailing shoot/ad campaign after shoot/ad campaign.  She’s taking over the fashion world, and I’m happy to let her.  Not to mention, this is something different from her normal androgynous charm.  Fabulous darling.

Amazing black and white editorial from Freja.  It depicts the soft(er) side to her; something we rarely see.  She has an edgy persona and fierce (and extremely awesome) reputation for shoots.  She comes out with wonderfully androgynous, daring, and unusual material every time.  But every once and a while, that spark of hers gets lost as the viewer constantly sees the same fierceness each and every time.  I love that she’s willing to push the envelope but it’s really nice to see her do something else.  I love that she has the versatility to change (the mark of an excellent model) and that she can give a different part of herself to this.
